Try turning off Accelerate 3D graphics to see if you can get to the Desktop. Have a look at: 
Configure Display Settings for a Virtual Machine
Once there you can set the Users Account to automatically login then shutdown and then turn on Accelerate 3D graphics to see if it will then go to the Desktop.
